Practical
Chinese Reader I
for Foreigners
Practical Chinese Reader is one of the best classics from China. Those Chinese language textbooks are edited by Beijing Languages Institute. The textbooks are used widely by colleges in the United States and many other countries. The first edition goes back to 1981.

This elementary course is a most for foreign students and people who want to learn on their own. The first course counts 50 lessons divided into 2 volumes (Book I and II). This well structured course includes texts in the form of dialogues; notes to explain the difficult sentences; phonetic drills; substitution exercises; grammatical rules accompanied by exercises of application as well as tables on the order to follow to trace the Chinese characters.

Books I and II constitute the basic level covering together 1000 Chinese words. The settings in situation of volume I introduce two students who prepare a stay in China. In volume II you find them in China. The stress is thus laid on the vocabulary of everyday usage for the daily needs. Texts illustrating the life and the Chinese culture supplement the dialogues.

Then in 1987 a second course of 30 lessons divided into 2 volumes appears (Books III and IV). Authors indicate that the goal of these two volumes aim at enriching knowledge by the student on the Chinese language, to perfect his skills of communication and to provide him a base for higher studies. Those lessons speak about the social, economic and political life. A multitude of subjects of the everyday life are covered: economy, history, education, sports, arts and many others. The 30 lessons of books III and IV introduce a vocabulary of 2000 words and expressions. It is enough to reach the elementary level of the modern Chinese.

Finally Books V and VI gather also 30 lessons introducing 3000 words and expressions. Book V aims at developing the student reading skills. The texts approach topics surrounding the current businesses. Book VI the last one is centred on the literature.
